About us
Disabled Motoring UK is a campaigning charity for disabled motorists and Blue Badge holders. We lobby government & businesses across the UK in order to improve parking, refuelling and access provision for disabled people, so that they can access the goods and services that they need.
Disabled Motoring UK (formerly Mobilise) was formed in 2005 from a merger of two long-standing charities, the Disabled Drivers’ Association (founded as the Invalid Tricycle Association in 1948) and the Disabled Drivers’ Motor Club (founded in 1922).
With almost a hundred years of campaigning history behind us, we have already achieved some major successes for disabled people. Both the DDMC and the DDA were at the forefront of the campaigns which resulted in:
- The Blue Badge parking scheme
- The Mobility Allowance (now the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance)
- The Motability scheme
Disabled Motoring UK is currently campaigning on a wide range of issues that affect disabled people, including the abuse of disabled parking bays, the planned reform of the Blue Badge Scheme, accessibility of city centres and the lack of free parking at healthcare facilities. Together with our partners we run the Baywatch campaign, which surveys the abuse of disabled parking spaces across the UK and encourages supermarkets and other parking providers to improve their provision and enforcement of Blue Badge bays. You can find out more information in our Campaigns section.
